Greetings from BRCA 28605!
NC Senate Bill 759 Clarification
BRCA would like to thank Senator Ralph Hise for being the primary sponsor of this bill.
BRCA is sending a second communication this week on this very important topic. There will be a 2024 Watauga County Board of Commissioners election to determine who will serve the Blowing Rock district. There are two At Large seats that expire in 2026 but in order to have a specific Commissioner to serve this district they must be elected in 2024 by the voters of the district.
Specifics of the new bill:
AN ACT TO ESTABLISH ELECTION DISTRICTS FOR THE WATAUGA COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS TO ESTABLISH RESIDENCY DISTRICTS FOR THE ANSON COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS; AND TO MODIFY THE PRIMARY PROCESS THE JOHNSTON COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION. The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts: SECTION 1.(a) Until modified, the Watauga County Board of Commissioners shall consist of five Board members who shall serve staggered four-year terms. The Board members on the Watauga County Board of Commissioners shall be elected from five single-member electoral districts. One Board member shall be elected from each district, and the qualified voters of each district shall elect the Board member for that district. Only qualified voters residing in that district may vote for the Board member from that district, and each candidate for a district seat shall reside in the district in which the candidate seeks election.
A district map will be available within the next few days from the Watauga County Board of Elections. We hope to provide that in next week’s communications.
