Queens of Blowing Rock & Dangers of Radon

Greetings from BRCA 28605!

We apologize for not getting a message out last week, the Mail Chimp website was down, and we couldn’t access it to create a message.

Queens of Blowing Rock

Two important videos this week.  We are including Dr. Barry Buxton’s presentation at BRCC.  This is a very informative presentation of the facts and history behind his lates publication, Queens of Blowing Rock.  You can view his presentation with the following link: https://vimeo.com/1093838863

The Danger of Radon

Jean and Tom also interviewed nationally known Radon specialist Stacy R. Stanifer, PhD, APRN, AOCNS of the University of Kentucky Center for Appalachian Research & Environmental Sciences, and Radon Policy Director of BREATH.  Watauga is one of the eight counties in NC with dangerously high levels of Radon and no one is talking about it.  Behind smoking it is the second leading cause of lung cancer.  The higher potential is due to the rocks that form the mountains. I don’t try to be a geologist, but it appears the mountains contain granite and other rock that are high in uranium, which breaks down into radon.  Please view this interview here: https://vimeo.com/1094170023

CALL TO ACTION

Everyone should have their home tested and if the reading is above 4.0 pCi/L it may require professional remediation.

Call to Action II

House Bill 765 is still alive.  It has been merged into House Bill 205.  This bill removes the authority of local government to control Planning and Zoning and could significantly affect local planning, zoning, and property values.  Please reach out to your local state elected officials and ask them to “VOTE NO” on this bill.
