The radon detection kits are a way for locals to have an initial indication of the presence of radon in their home, tested on the lowest level living space in the home closest to the ground. If these devices test at levels of 4.0 or above the next step is a professional radon test from a licensed professional that may require remediation. We recently installed our first system and levels are still high so a second system is on the way. Radon is a dangerous tasteless-odorless gas that is one of the top causes of lung cancer in the US. Watauga County has one of the highest recorded levels in North Carolina and among the most dangerous counties in western North Carolina.
The Blowing Rock Civic Association (BRCA) is delighted to provide our community with these free radon test kits free of charge. Our September 3rd 2025 town meeting at the library outlined the dangers of radon and that video is available on our website under “28605” with a presentation by the director of the program for North Carolina.
BRCA has also negotiated a $100 flat fee for in-home testing with Clean & Dry Environmental Solutions in Boone. Matt Ashmore, owner. A-1 Pest Control: Radon Remediation has also offered a $100 flat fee for home testing. Just mention BRCA. Remediation is normally recommended at a level of 4.0 or higher. Our home registered 118!
