Watauga County Filing Closes for Commissioner Race
Now that the period for candidate filings to run for Watauga County Commission has been closed, it is important to understand how the new Watauga County commissioner districts impact the residents of Blowing Rock.
Senator Ralph Hise and Representative Ray Pickett worked to get the NC Senate and NC House to approve changing from at-large candidate elections for Watauga County to district elections. This allows each district to elect a representative who lives in his or her district and knows who the specific constituents of that district are to be their voice in county issues.
Two candidates filed to run for the seat in Blowing Rock: Todd Castle (Republican) and Sue Sweeting (Democrat). Castle is currently serving as an at-large commissioner, having been elected in 2022, and Sweeting formerly served on the Blowing Rock Town Council. Both candidates have expressed support for better ambulance service for Blowing Rock. As election season progresses, the Blowing Rock Civic Association will work to pose questions to both candidates so voters will know which person most closely aligns which their interests and views on issues of importance to them.
Merry Christmas!
