RADON TOWN MEETING
BRCA has focused on the danger of radon over the past few months. There will be a townwide free public meeting at Blowing Rock Community Library on September 3, 2025 at 5:00 PM. The library is located at 1022 Main Street. Our speaker is Phillip Ray Gibson, NC Radon Program Coordinator, Division of Health Service Regulation, Radiation Protection Section, North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services in Raleigh. The meeting will allow our citizens to gather information and learn about the dangers of radon gas, which is known to be at high levels in Watauga County. This presentation will provide an overview of radon risk in Watauga County, share historical data and trends, and offer guidance for testing and mitigation. Phillip looks forward to a collaborative and informative session that supports the well-being of our community.
The meeting will cover:
- Basic Fact Sheet – An overview of radon, its risks, and key facts.
- Children Radon Awareness – An overview of how young children whose lungs are developing are more vulnerable
- Pet Radon Awareness – An overview of how dogs and cats may be more vulnerable
- Watauga County Guidance Document – Specific guidance tailored to Watauga County based on local data.
- Display of the highest recorded radon level in Watauga County from tests conducted from 2010 to 2025.
- Show the estimated proportion of homes tested for radon in Watauga County over the same 15-year period.
Please mark your calendar and plan to attend this very important meeting. The event is co-sponsored by Blowing Rock Civic Association and Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce.
