Greetings from BRCA 28605 on this very soggy Thursday! Over eight inches of rain as of the 8th day of August.
BRCA Annual Member Meeting: will take place on Thursday August 29, 2024, at 5:00 PM at the Perry Car Barn. Parking is available at Rumple Church (1218 Main Street). The shuttle starts at 4:30 from the church. The meeting is from 5:00-7:00PM. Shuttle service ends at 7:30. Wine and Hors d’oeuvres provided. There is no parking at the Car Barn. You should have received your Evite yesterday.
Music at Broyhill Park Today Cancelled: Due to inclement weather the event was scheduled for today at 5:00 PM. BRCA wants to thank all of those who joined us to enjoy our concerts in June (Harris Brothers) and July (Smokin’ Joe Randolph) and will be in touch about future BRCA-sponsored community events when they are scheduled
Sunset On The Move: There is a wonderful new independent bookstore called Book and Candle on Sunset just up from Sunset & Vine (next to Bark & Co.). There is also a home decorating shop there that I had not seen before called Blowing Rock Home on the other side of Bark. And the Famous Toastery has an “Open” sign. Hooray for Sunset!
Level 1 Water Restrictions Lifted: The water restrictions have been lifted by the Town of Blowing Rock.
High Country Press July 25, 2024, Article Watauga County Commissioners: Voting Districts Explained. For 2024 Watauga County will have 5 districts, and the registered voters of those districts will elect their commissioner to specifically serve that district. Blowing Rock, Blue Ridge, Elk, and Stony Fork are in district 5. Todd Castle (R) is running for election to District 5 and faces Sue Sweeting (D). Great resource article for further understanding the new Senate Bill 579 which became law on October 25, 2023. There will be a referendum on the Watauga County Ballot for November 2024 to propose further change. The referendum proposes dividing the county into 3 districts and having 2 at large seats. It is unclear how a county referendum could override a state law. The General Assembly has just passed another bill (introduced by Ralph Hise) that says that if the referendum passes and is effective to change the law that was passed last year, the new changes can’t take effect until 2032.
TOBR/Mayview Partnership: Thanks to a unique partnership between the Mayview Park Homeowners Association and the Town of Blowing Rock, Mayview Plaza, the island on Laurel Lane between Main Street and Wallingford Street is being restored and enhanced to make it an attractive focal point of downtown Blowing Rock and an inviting gateway to the town’s new History Walk and Broyhill Lake. The addition of landscape lighting makes the island particularly attractive at night. This project is a great example of our homeowners and our town’s leaders working together to make our beloved town an even better place to live and to work.
State of the Town: Mayor Charlie Sellers’ Mayor’s The 2024 State of the Town program is at BRAHM at 5;30 pm on Thursday, August 15. The Town Council will meet next on August 13
